The six
South Americans ditched by Dundee United claimed last night they
didn't know there was a clause in their contracts allowing the
Tannadice club to sack them. As the players from Honduras
Argentina and Uruguay prepared to fly out of Scotland they angrily
accused United of keeping them in the dark. Caretaker boss Alex
Smith told Reynaldo Clavasquin, Fracisco Ramirez, Marcelino Galoppo,
Luis Pabio Pozzuto Carlos Marcora and Jose Manuel Rey earlier
this week that their deals were being terminated.
The six reacted
furiously - with some revealing they had already made plans to
move their families over here.Argy midfielder Gallopo said "We
are so disappointed. The club lied to us and this is very hard
to take it. "We recently played against Rangers in a reserve game
and Alex Smith cogratulated us on our performance. "It
was a shock when just two days later he took us to his office
and sacked us. "I believe we have enough quality to help United,
but the fact is we are - unemployed and have to find jobs. "My
wife has resigned from her job . to fly over to Scotland with
my little girl who has already left her school. I don't know who
is responsible, but someone's lied to us. "I went to the office
every day to try and get a copy of my contract but never saw one.
"People just kept on saying "Ask your manager' "We all negotiated
our freedom from our respective clubs to play for United.
We all have
families to look after. "Two weeks ago Alex Smith told us we were
playing very well and he was happy with all of us. "Then he told
us he was sacking us. "I played from the start against Rangers
and Hearts and in the second game I received an ovation from the
supporters when I was subbed. Pozzuto who was a team-mate of Diego
Maradona at Deportivo Mandiyu now faces life on the dole in Argentina.
He said: "We were suspicious when they never gave us copies of
our contracts. "But I want to make it clear I never put a gun
to the club to come here. "They were completely responsible for
bringing me over from Argentina. "I cannot sign for a club in
my country because the league season has already started and the
market is closed.
"United never
told me about the firing clause at any time" "I would say
though, that our team-mates were absolutely superb" "They
spent time with us trying to communicate and despite the language
barrier they made every effort to speak with us." Clavasquin arrived
in Scotland with the reputation as one of the best defenders in
Central America. He added: "I am hoping my old club Motagua will
still take me back." Marcora said: "I trusted everybody and paid
for it."
