Great European results in the club's history.
Second's Best by Wallace Moore
Dundee United 3 (Redford 53, 88, Clark 81) Universite Craiova 0

DUNDEE UNITED produced yet another remarkable rabbit from the European hat last night. After 45 minutes against a useful Rumanian side., it seemed they would be lucky to take any lead behind the Iron Curtain next month. But United's super-human effort, despite facing a superhuman goalkeeper, produced three goals that make them favourites to reach round three of the UEFA Cup.

IAN REDFORD KEPT UP AN AMAZING SCORING RUN FOR UNITED BY NETTING TWO MORE TO BRING HIS EUROPEAN TOTAL TO SEVEN And close behind in the hero stakes was powerful 22-year-old John Clark, who celebrated his promotion in place of injured skipper Paul Hegarty. He scored the vital second goal when ie seemed Craiova would escape with the minimum of damage thanks to magnificent goalkeeper Daniel Racolta. United knew they were in a match when a shot by Adrian Popescu came down off the bar and hit keeper Billy Thomson on the back after just two minutes.

Throughout the first half, United struggled to get their act together. They created only one genuine chance, when Paul Sturrock forced Racolta to make a fine save at the near post following a cross by Ralph Milne. BUT ONE OF MANAGER JIM McLEAN'S FAMOUS PEP TALKS ONCE AGAIN BROUGHT RESULTS.

Just eight minutes after the interval Clark came to the edge of the box to head a Milne corner into the danger wne. Redford wheeled inside the cix yard box to beat Racolta with a low shot. Racolta then proceeded to show that he would prefer to give no more away with simply magnificent saves from Redford and Dave Bowman. But nine minutes from time Clark raced forward again and this time did it all on his own, heading in a Bannon comer. Two minutes from time the trip to Romania became a much more comfortable prospect when Redford headed a third. It was the culmination of a great effort by the Tannadice men, and it must hearten McLean that it was achieved with so many players new to the European arena.
