Great
Players in United's History
|
Geordie
Henderson
Little winger who played 69 games for the
club and scored 22 goals. Made his debut in the 4-0 win against Bathgate
in August 1928. He scored the winning goal against Dundee in the Third
round of the Scottish Cup that year. Was an integral part of the team
that won the Second Division Championship in season 1928/29. The United
player then moved on to Rhyll. He made his debut for them in 1930, his
other clubs also included Forfar and Dundee. He left Scotland for the
States.
Arthur
Milne Signed for the
club in 1934 and scored 85 goals in 81 appearances in the next three seasons.
Made his debut as a 19 year old and scored 4 goals in a 9-6 win against
Edinburgh City. He was called Li'l Arthur because he was only 5' 5 and
a half although this height disadvantage certainly didn't stop him finding
the back of the net on a regular basis. The player asked for a transfer
in 1937 in a row over pay and went to Liverpool on loan. This lead to
confusion over the players registration, which left the player to act
on his own behalf. In other words he was one of footballs first free agents.
Milne signed for Hibs and United did not receive any transfer money. The
club only got £750 compensation. They had previously turned down a £3000
bid from Chelsea for the player. Milne did return to United in 1939 and
played as a War Guest in a 2-2 draw against St. Johnstone at Tannadice.
He left United to sign for St. Mirren, before having a go at management
with Irish side Colerain.
Duncan
Hutchinson Prolific
goalscorer who scored 119 goals in 181 appearances in his two spells for
the club between 1927 and 1939. "Hurricane Hutch" as he was
known made his debut against Bathgate in August 1927 in a 4-2 win. He
scored 36 goals in all competitions that year. The team finished sixth
that season all be it 2 points behind Third Lanark who got the second
promotion place to Division one. In the 1928/29 season Hutch scored 41
goals as United won the Championship and promotion to Division one. He
was then sold to Newcastle for £4050, a decision which caused uproar from
the United fans. He returned to Tannadice in 1935 from Hull City on a
free and made his second debut in the league match against St. Bernards.
He scored 14 goals that season taking a little while to find his feet
back in the Scottish game. After retiring from the game Hutch became a
Publican at the United Bar in Castle Street. He became a director of the
club in 1953, then became club chairman in 1963. He died on the 12th January
1973.
Peter
McKay
The club's all
time leading goalscorer with 202 goals in 238 games a quite remarkable
record. Made his debut in a
1-0 League Cup defeat against Cowdenbeath in September 1947. McKay was
a firm favourite with the fans due to his high scoring record. Nearly
signed for St. Johnstone, but chose Tannadice 5 minutes before Saints
manager Jimmy Crapnell chapped on his door. His consistent record of nearly
a goal a game coincided with some excellent results for the club in his
seasons at Tannadice. Joined Burnley in May 1954 aged 29 for £3000. Scored
a hat trick on his First Division debut. Returned to Tannadice with his
new club for a friendly, a game in which he scored twice in a 4-0 win.
George
Grant A midfielder who pulled
the strings in the heart of the United team. Born in Dundee in 1923 and
signed from Arbroath in 1946. Made his debut later that year against former
club Arbroath at Tannadice. George scored 3 goals in 3 minutes against
Hamilton in a B - Division game. Quite a feat for a midfielder, although
George had a good goalscoring record from the middle of the park 32 goals
in 195 games. Was given a testimonial by the club for his loyal service
before moving to Fauldhouse. Became a director of the club in 1973 and
then chairman in 1988 before dying 2 days later aged 67. Continue
