Johnny
Coyle Another prolific goalscorer
for the club. Born in 1933 he was provisionally signed for the club in
September 1950 before being called up in February 1951. Made his debut
in a reserve match at Tannadice against East Fife. Before joining United
he had played for local side St. Josephs. At the age of 18 he made his
first team debut. Coyle scored 115 goals in 130 games for United. In season
1955/56 he played in 43 League and cup games and scored 43 goals. The
player was transferred to Clyde in 1957 for £8000. He scored the only
goal for Clyde in a 1-0 Scottish Cup win the following season.
Ian
Mitchell
Winger signed in July 1962 as a sixteen year
old from Woodburn Athletic and made his debut for the club in September
1962 in a 5-0 win over Hibs. Probably best known for his goal in the home
tie against Barcelona in the 2-0 home win in 1966. Not just a provider
of goals but an excellent finisher as well as his 125 goals in 261 League,
Cup and European games testifies. Was transferred for a then club record
fee of £50,000 to Newcastle in 1970. He returned to the club later in
a swap deal for Alex Reid before joining Falkirk.
Finn
Dossing: The first
of three Scandanavians who set the club alight in the 1960's. Signed by
Jimmy Kerr in December 1964. He was snapped up in secrecy after scoring
4 goals in a trial match. Made his debut against Hearts at Tynecastle
in December 1964 in a 3-1 defeat. He scored United's only goal that day.He
played 21 games that season and scored 22 goals. All in all Finn played
102 games for the club and scored 66 goals an excellent record in the
fierce competition of Division One. Scored the winner against Juventus
in a 1-0 home win in 1967. Left the club in October 1967 to return home
to Denmark.
Orjan
Persson: The most famous of the
trio Orjan joined the club in December 1964 from Orgryte Sweden. The former
Swedish table tennis champion and full international made his debut for
the club in the 3-1 away defeat at Hearts in 1964. He was the first foreign
player to sign for the club. Powerfully built he was a crowd pleaser with
his mazy runs and accurate crossing. His goals for the club were often
spectacular efforts. He was the first player at United to win a full cap
for his country. In 101 games for the club he scored 17 goals. After a
dispute with the club he returned to Sweden before signing for Rangers
in 1967. United got £25,000 plus Davie Wilson and Wilson Wood in return.
Lennart
Wing: Joined the Club from the
same Swedish team as Orjan Persson in January 1965. Made his debut for
the club that month in a 2-0 home win against St. Mirren. He was voted
player of the year by the United supporters in the season 1966/67. The
tough tackling half - back was a firm favourite of the fans for his no
nonsense style. He returned home at the end of the 1967 season and ended
what had been a very successful spell at the club. Continue
