Great
Players in United's History
|
Dennis
Gillespie:
Joined the club in
August 1959 from Alloa for a fee of £3000. He made his debut at Tannadice
against St. Johnstone in 1959. Gillespie was a man of slight frame with
a big heart and tons of ability. The forward scored more than 120 goals
in over 400 competitive appearances spanning 12 years. He was the first
player to be capped by the Scottish League and was awarded a testimonial
for his loyal service to the club.
Tommy
Traynor:
Signed for United in the close season of 1970.
Nicknamed "Spike" because of his haircut, Tommy played 168 games
for the club and scored 21 goals. Famous for scoring a last minute equaliser
against Dunfermline in the Quater Final of the Scottish Cup in 1974. The
winger constantly supplied the forwards with goalscoring opportunities,
and it was because of this he was a fixture in the team and a favourite
with the fans for just over 5 seasons. Scored a hat tick in a 5-0 win
over Hearts in September 1974.
Doug
Smith Known
as "Mr Consistent", Doug played 587 league and cup games for
the club between 1959 and 1976. Made his debut in a 3-0 league cup defeat
against Falkirk in September 1959. Smith was a strong centre half who
controlled the clubs defence. Doug captained the side when the club made
it to the Scottish Cup final for the first time in 1974. He played his
last game for the club in May 1976. He is presently Vice-Chairman of the
club.
Andy
Gray Prolific goalscorer for the
club. Signed from Clydebank Strollers in 1973 and made his debut against
Motherwell later that year when he came on as a sub. Scored 40 goals in
96 games for the club. was the first United player to be sold for a six
figure sum £110,000 when he signed for Aston Villa in 1975. Ended the
1974/75 as the joint top scorer in Division 1 with Motherwell''s Willie
Pettigrew (soon to be a United player himself) with 20 league goals. He
scored 26 that season a tremendous record for a 19 year old. Many of his
goals resulted from his fearless style of play, something he kept throughout
his career. He matured into a player of the highest calibre, winning twenty
caps for his country.
Paul
Sturrock Joined United in 1974
from Luncarty Juniors and made his debut at 16 on the European stage in
a Cup Winners Cup tie against Juli Petrosani. His honours with United
include 2 League Cups, in which he scored in both finals, and a League
championship medal. He was also honoured by the Scottish Football Writers
Association in season 1981/82. Luggy had an electric turn of pace and
his finishing was second to none. Paul remains the Clubs leading scorer
and only one of 2 players to pass the 100 mark in League games. I think
his only regret would be that he didn't get his hands on a Scottish Cup
winners medal, having been bridesmaid on 4 occasions. Scored 170 goals
in 572 appearances for the club. Capped by Scotland on 20 occasions scoring
2 goals. Played a major part in the most successful period in the clubs
history before retiring in 1989. He is now the Manager of the club. Continue
