Great
Players in United's History
|
Paul
Hegarty:
Born in 1954, and is now recognised as a Tannadice
legend. He was signed by manger Jim McLean in November 1974 for £40,000
from Hamilton Accies. While playing for them he had scored 12 goals since
August 1974. Paul was originally a forward, until the manager moved him
into a role in central defence, a role that would lead Paul to being capped
for his country. He made his first team debut in November 1974 in a 5-0
win over Partick Thistle. As captain of united Paul lead the team to the
League championship, league cup finals and countless memorable nights
in Europe. Paul left the club in January 1990 to sign for St. Johnstone.
He played over 600 games for the club and won eight caps for his country
as well as the Scottish PFA player of the year award in 1979.
Davie
Dodds:
Joined United from local amateur
team Sporting Club in 1975 and made his debut a year later aged 17 against
Arbroath. He showed the promise of things to come by scoring twice. He
was a big lad who was good in the air but he also had a fair turn of pace
and a good touch for a big man. He was United's top scorer 5 seasons in
the Eighties and like Sturrock played a major part in bringing success
to the club. He scored 22 goals the season we won our only title to date.
He like Sturrock scored over 100 League goals for the club before signing
for Neuchatel Xamax in 1985. Scored 150 goals in 370 games for the club.
Made 2 appearances for Scotland scoring once.
Dave
Narey:
At the age of 15 was one of Jim McLean's first signings in January 1972
and he began as an apprentice the following year. He made his first-team
debut in 1973 at the age of 17 and was soon a regular from 1974/75. He
quickly matured into a defender of great distinction, a fact recognised
by the representative honours he gained at all levels, being the first
ever United player to be capped at full-level in 1977. In his 22 years
as a United player, Dave established the record number of appearances
for the club with 866, as well as records for each of the individual competitions.
An era came to the end in 1994 when he left United on a free transfer
to join Raith Rovers, adding to his impressive array of honours by helping
them win the Coca Cola Cup and First Division Championship. He then retired
and severed his connection with the game, spurning offers of coaching
posts. Won 35 caps for his country and scored the famous toe poke against
Brazil in the 1982 World Cup in Spain.
Hamish
Mc Alpine: Hamish
was signed in 1966 from Butterburn youth Club. He made his full debut
in 1969, but it took him until 1974 to finally claim the No1 shirt as
his own. He was a fixture in the side through it's most successful period
making almost 500 appearances for the club and winning 2 League Cup and
a Championship medal. He amazingly scored 3 goals in his time at Tannadice
and was renowned as a bit of an extrovert, although he always knew when
to play the fool, and when not too. Hamish won the SFWA Player of the
year award in season 1984/85. He left in 1986 to join Raith Rovers. Continue
