Dundee United
are out of the Fairs Cup...beaten by one of the fineat defensive
barriers in the world. United broke through the black ans white
wall of juventus only once in the 82nd minute at Tannadice last
night. But by then it was too late. the chance of a ticket to meet
Dinamo Zagreb in the quarter finals was gone. The Tannadice Terrors
were magnificent fighters, but they didn't have it in them to grab
the golden scores to pull back the three goal deficet from the first
leg in Turin.
But they need
not be ashamed of this defeat. They achieved enough by beating the
Italians, who were determined right from the start not to lose a
goal. It was Finn Dossing, the man United brought into Europe for
the first time, who got the goal eight minutes from the end. If
a goal had come in the first half - and United did have scoring
chances - they might have achieved the impossible. Juventus for
all their stubborn defending showed signs that they might crack
if they lost a quick goal.
There were the
usual time wasting tactics from the Italians. Players went down
at the least excuse - sometimes without an excuse as they battled
to keep United out. There were signs of panic as the magnificent
Tannadice fighters piled on the pressure. But United didn't get
the vital goal in the first half...and the second half was almost
a formality. United still fought and fought bravely, but you sensed
that they were beaten. The 28,0000 Tannadice fans had reason to
be disappointed, not only with their own teams performance but how
Juventus played. Their one aim was to hold their lead. There ws
none of the artistry of Cineshino, the power shooting of De Paoli
or the lightning raids of Manichetti.
There were three
outstanding efforts that might have brought United goals in the
first half. Finn Seemann caught goalkeeper Anzolin out after 13
minutes with a swerving free kick but the keeper recovered to smother
the shot. Billy Hainey was just inches out with a try in the 26th
minute, and Neilson was unlucky when he burst through in the 33rd
minute.
When the goal
finally did come it was a scrappy one. for once Juventus didn't
clear the danger, Dossing and Persson pounced and the left winger
seemed to push Anzolin as Dossing nipped in to push the ball home.
