Great European results in the club's history.
Milne magic does trick by Wallace Moore
Dundee United 2 (Milne 55, Coyne 59) Lens 0

Dundee United fell back on all their years of European experience last night at Tannadice and found four more minutes of magic. For 54 minutes they battered away at a French defence that created but showed no real sign of cracking. But the Taysiders, who made their first European appearance almost exactly 20 years ago, didn't panic, And when the reward finally presented itself they knew exactly how to accept it.

There was though, blazing controversey, over the second goal in 59 minutes which saw them safely into the second round of the UEFA Cup. Lens launched a mass protest that Ralph Milne was offside before he played the ball inside for Tommy Coyne to bundle it into the net.

What the French overlooked was the fact United should have had a penalty seconds earlier when Senac appeared to handle another Milne cross. Coach Joachim Marx joined in the protest and was ordered to the stand by Italian referee Claudio Pieri.

Lens did threaten to score a crucial away goal near the end, but United had again done their work when it really mattered. The first United goal in 55 minutes owed everything to the vast experience of Milne, Eammon Bannon and Paul Sturrock. Bannon just kept the ball in play and there seemed no real danger until Sturrock made a darting run to catch it. Goalkeeper Huard 'sold himself by racing to the corner of his box and when Sturrock played the ball inside, Milne cooly made room and time before shooting home. It was Milne's 15th European goal for United and transfer-seeking Coyne's winner justified his place in the team.

BUT,OVER THE 90 MINUTES, NO UNITED PLAYERS DID BETTER THAN GARY McGINNIS AND FORMER CELT JIM McINALLY. Dave Beaumont moved to centre defence when Dave Narey was ruled out , and was another big success. Before the goals. United's best effort was a superb dipping shot by lan Redford which Huard touched on to the bar.
