A complete list of United's managers through the years.

Alex Smith - Appointed 07/08/2000

Alex was apppointed initially on an interim basis to steady the sinking Tannadice ship after the unexpected resignation of former boss Paul Sturrock. Alex has a wealth of experience in the game and is also responsible for running the Scotland Under 21 team on a part time basis. His record speaks fot itself with a couple of Scottish Cup's in the trophy cabinet at St. Mirren (beating United 1-0 in the Final) and Aberdeen.

Known as a man who can get the best out of his players it is this quality the United hope will steer the club away from the relegation zone and back to challenging for trophies and European football on a regular basis. We at The Glory Years wish Alex all the best in his quest.

Jim McLean  -The most successful manager ever of the club. And in today's climate of Old Firm dominance, he will probably always be remembered that way. Not a man to be messed about, he was a strong figure on which most of the clubs success was built. Tactically astute he out thought some of the greatest minds Europe had to offer. Success at home and abroad brought the club 2 League Cups, a Scottish Championship, a UEFA Cup final and European Cup semi final appearance.

The basis of his teams were home grown and he took a lot of pride in the fact that he didn't have to look out with the club too often to get the right player. Maybe his only criticism was that he wanted the big prizes so much that he instilled a nervousness in his teams especially in the only domestic prize to elude him, the Scottish Cup. His team's were renowned as very hard to beat, but not without a certain amount of flair and panache. He will always be remembered by most of the fans as the man who brought us into the big time and made us believe that we could compete at the highest level both here and inEurope.
