Dundee United
stole the Monte Carlo show from a star-studded cast in the Louis
II Stadium 'laost night. Jim Mclean's side reserved their best European
performance for an audience which included Prince Ranier and Film-star
David Niven, Monaco were left with as much chance of reaching round
two as the poor punlers at the casino up the road have of breaking
the bank. United were simply superb. They roared into a 2-0 lead
in 20 minutes and came through a sticky spell after the interval
to wipe away the French challenge.
The only surprise
in the game was that it took United 15 minutes to go in front. Eamonn
Bannon, who along with Ralph Milne and Paul Sturrock. had too much
pace for Monaco, turned his full back inside out. His cross to the
far post was perfection and Billy Kirkwood headed powerfully into
the net. Five minutes later it was 2-0 as Davie Dodds coolly side-footed
a Sturrock cross into the net.
United were stunned
when Swedish star Ralph Edstroem scored for Monaco from glaringly
offside position. Bannon made it 3-1 in 67 minutes from a penalty
kick after Sturrock had been brought down-Three minutes later Dodds
made it 4-1 when he headed home. Bannon scored a second spot kick
six minutes from time. What a pity that United spoiled this superb
show slightly when Hamish McAlpine punched a cross by Bruno Vellone
into his own net in the final mintute. |
